Britain's electricity system operator announced an ambition to reduce reliance on diesel and gas generators for short-term backup reserve, in favour of batteries. Some coverage reported this as though the shift had already happened. The operator's own numbers say otherwise.

What was actually announced: a target date, several years out, by which battery storage should cover a substantially larger share of the system's Short-Term Operating Reserve.

What the current numbers show: diesel and gas generators still supply the large majority of contracted reserve capacity today. Battery storage's share, while growing, remains a minority.

The bottom line: a real, sensible long-term goal. But diesel and gas are still doing the bulk of the backup job today, and will be for some years yet, on the operator's own figures.
