Reports this year claimed India's EV sales "surged over 90%" in the first half of 2026, crossing 100,000 units. Dig into the source data and the real number is 83%, and it only covers passenger electric cars, which are a small slice of India's actual EV market.
The fuller picture: India's total EV market, including two- and three-wheelers, which make up the large majority of EV sales in the country, grew 43% year-on-year to just over 1.54 million units in the same period. The "100,000 units" and "90%" figures both refer only to passenger e-cars, a genuinely fast-growing but comparatively small category.
The bottom line: e-cars really are growing much faster than the rest of India's EV market, that part is true and worth reporting. But quoting the e-car growth rate as if it describes "India's EV sales" overall makes a niche category's strong year sound like the whole market's story.
